Day 143: Tuesday May 23, 2017 - “Stamp”

‘Tuesday’ started fast and abruptly ended as I landed in Manila at 11:00p local at Ninoy Aquino International Airport. I had my mind right and was ready for the moment of stepping off airport into this new place; had warning from AC’s brother that this was going to be quite the shock to system. Ready for it. Figured itd start at customs, but here I was met by my first Filipino, smiling and happy to welcome me in. I have been quizzed and pestered more at the Canadian border crossing for dinner (the queen’s spanking day notwithstanding) - here in Manila, I cruised right through without a single question. I guess that new passport works! It was a signature, albeit anti-climatic moment amongst all the buzz. Ive roamed and rambled, and followed my footsteps, to the sparkling sands of her diamond deserts..... but I have never gotten a passport stamp. And that smiley guy, unprovoked, put it exactly where I had hoped he would; on the page with the ship crossing the ocean, just like I had. Phillipines will always be my first. I looked into my book and realized that this kind of game could definitely get addictive.

Great people watching at the slow slow slow luggage claim. After 30 minutes my big purple suitcase came through. I pulled it off, and whispered to myself - “lets get after it” - I could see out the exit that a circus fair was waiting for me, and me in my Phillipines Party City hat and 2 day old underwear was ready.

Rolled out on the loud busy curb and followed the directions to cross. Got in touch with my handler who told me where the driver was waiting. “Find XYZ” - okie dokie. The thing about the first people to greet me was that every single person that laid eyes on this 6′4″ American wanted to help....I could tell not all were helpful. I got direction from a security guy to follow the crowd down below. Another unhelpful helper told me to stay put and he would find my driver. He did not. I would learn later that my guy, Ogie, was watching the whole thing unfold and knew it was me....just waiting for me to get close enough to grab me. The package now in tow, he led me out to his car. I could tell that he had been anxious about getting me and having that go very smooth. I worked hard at reading my first friend, and appreciated that he was pretty transparent, and like me, put a high stock on being useful. The best way I could describe the scene was like being at a county fair minutes after the headline concert let out. Ogie navigated the traffic, and the Manila racetrack that followed to get me up onto the skyway that delivered me to my hotel. 12 hours ahead of est, it was now 1am in Manila. I worked for a bit from my new home trying to put off sleep for as long as I could and checking in with my mates back stateside. Id have until 8p Weds before having to go to work. Time to settle and reflect - I had made it safely to my destination. Glided with the grooves and flowed with the changes, stretching my horizons. Time to find my feet and make this place my own. Id eventually get a few hours of sleep but up early to get my first meal here, a breakfast buffet complete with Eggs over Myron, some helpful staff that help me convert some tip money (45 Php to $1), a shower that cleans you from straight above - my kind of tall mans shower!! Pouring rain outside welcomed me to the island in daylight. Time to get after it.

I work for a local county government department and we need a new managed hosting solution. Our current needs are fairly simple. We host 3 WordPress sites plus a small commercial PHP appointment scheduling app. The main site sees about 18k active users/mo, 39k unique pageviews/ mo. The other 2 sites only see a small amount of traffic.

We currently host the WP sites with WP Engine, and the PHP app with Siteground. WP Engine has proven problematic with our billing requirements and also we have started to need non-WP apps and integration with proprietary internal systems. We cannot use hosts like Digital Ocean, Vultr, Cloudways, etc as we need to have an invoice for the year which we use to have a Purchase Order issued and release the funds to the vendor. We also have limited staffing resources and require a fully managed solution where we only need to worry about our apps and websites.

We opened a account with Rackspace, but after delivery, the solution provided failed to meet our needs (they promised a fully managed server with us only needing to worry about the application layer. We received a dedicated server with only SSH access, no full featured control panel, no DB backup for WP). We are currently waiting for Rackspace to schedule a call to try to remediate our concerns. In case that effort fails, I need to have a backup available to present to management.

We might end up using Microsoft as the department is in talks for Microsoft’s full slate of services that could include web hosting (Azure), but this won’t be in place for another 12-18 months. We need something for the next year, as our current WP Engine plan expires in mid-May 2019.

Any suggestions for other providers to look at?

San Onofre shutdown problems continue to multiply

Just when you thought nothing more could go wrong with the San Onofre nuclear plant's shutdown process, new issues have emerged. The latest ones are associated with its location: a spectacular Southern California beach that is also one of the Pacific Coast's premier surfing magnets.

On July 2 the Orange County (where San Onofre is sited) Register ran the story "Should the San Onofre nuclear cooling pipes remain under the ocean?" The article was in response to an Environmental Impact Report (EIR) released by the California State Land's Commission, "one of many agencies with a sliver of authority over the teardown of San Onofre," according to the Register.

A central issue in the EIR is what is going to happen to all the high level nuclear waste left over at the nuke plant. Currently it is being put in "dry cask" canisters and buried only 100 feet from the shoreline, where some of it will remain lethal long after we are gone.

In the Register article, John Geesman, a lawyer for the Alliance for Nuclear Responsibility stated "The EIR emphasized the waste disposal. Quite conceivably, they're going to have to move the waste from from an initial (temporary) storage system and and decide if it should be relocated onsite.

"That would trigger cost related concerns" because such a move is not budgeted for in the $.4 billion in ratepayer money set aside for the cost of dismantling the nuke plant.

Complicating this, Geeson pointed out, is that "People are going to be using this as a recreation area for decades, if not centuries, in the future."

Sands of Time

Yes, it's all ultimately about going to the beach, isn't it? And at the San Onofre nuke beach, currently being manicured into a high level radioactive dump, the situation is even worse, since other leftover infrastructure belonging to owner Southern California Edison is further clogging up the works, potentially perpetually, as well.

As the Orange County Register article details, when San Onofre's two reactors were still operating (until 2012), the plant sucked vast amounts of seawater into them everyday they were running, and then pumped the heated up brine back into the Pacific.

This was done using pipes "18 inches in diameter and, for the most part, submerged under sand, " the Register reported. Now what's supposed to happen to this junk?

Edison's plan: "partial removal of the intake and discharge structures that stick up, leaving the rest in place."

But is this really where you'd to put down your beach blanket and umbrella? The Register reported, "Many in the environmental community feel Edison has an obligation to remove everything."

But that would cost Edison about 0 million, according to the newspaper.

Orange County Coastkeeper Garry Brown probably speaks for many when he asserts, "Southern California Edison wants to characterize these fallen structures as reefs. When in reality they are nothing more than subsurface construction. But in reality they are subsurface construction."

Viticulturists and scientists battle latest vineyard virus: red blotch

With 283 acres of wine grapes on a more than 2,000-acre ranch — complete with organic walnuts, olives for oil and grazing cattle — it’s the largest vineyard on the west side of Paso Robles, where the mountainous terrain, limestone-like soils, and ocean influence comprise a vintner’s paradise. What Pope didn’t realize, however, was that Halter Ranch was soon to be on the front lines in the fight against red blotch, the latest grapevine disease threatening vineyards across the continent. Pope is one of the few farmers not afraid to speak openly about his battle with red blotch, which, if left unchecked, could greatly diminish both the quality and quantity of California wines, from Napa to Santa Barbara counties. For one, leafroll is an RNA virus spread by vine mealybug, while red blotch infects the DNA and affects different varieties differently — Sauvignon Blanc leaves, for instance, don’t turn red early, and yields aren’t too hampered in Cabernet Sauvignon. The leading, and really only, suspicion is that infected vines entered the extensive commercial nursery system that growers rely on for new plantings. Since the virus was unknown, it wasn’t tested for, so spread widely as thousands of acres of vines were planted across the country over the past two decades. While Fuchs and others are examining genetic means of protecting plants against leafroll, red blotch, and other diseases — vaccines for vines, essentially — the only way to deal with red blotch right now is to either completely rip out your vineyard or methodically “rogue” it, taking out infected blocks or vines one by one. [...] it’s better than the alternative: a recent study published in the American Journal of Enology and Viticulture said that, when all economic factors are considered, red blotch could reach a $28,000-per-acre annual loss for high-end Napa vineyards. “That changed the dynamics,” explained Steve McIntyre, who farms 12,000 acres of grapevines in Monterey County and sat on the committee to stop the spread of the sharpshooter. Though he suspects there may be other vectors — there’s at least one other species that seems to be spreading the disease in cooler and hillside areas, whereas the treehopper prefers warmth and pools of water — finding the treehopper was a critical step. “If all the parties sit around the same table with the goal of producing and adopting clean material, I would venture to say that, in less than 10 years, the virus won’t vanish, but it will reach a very low level that will be very easy for the industry to manage,” pledged Fuchs. from Travel News and Features http://www.sfgate.com/wine/article/Viticulturists-and-scientists-battle-latest-11746710.php
